Summer on the Coast

Who Was “On The Coast” First?

I’m sure I should have addressed this long before now, but you know that old adage “out of sight, out of mind”…..😬 Well, when I first started my Instagram to share our build process (at the end of 2018/early 2019 we were scrambling to repair our “house build” wounds from Hurricane Michael) I chose the handle @OurFloridaFishHouse as a play on words because one of our big reasons for choosing this property was the water access (fishing) + one of my favorite restaurants locally has a similar name. But once my feed reached a 10k following, I felt the need to change it as I never thought that many eyes would see my account name and all of the sudden I worried that I had ripped off that restaurant’s wording (Old Florida Fish House). Plus, “fish house” DOES sound like a restaurant so there’s that. I spent a couple days (definitely did NOT take my time or do any real research) thinking of cool ways to use my first name (Summer 👋🏼) and location (coastal Florida town) to make my account more personal. {Back story: Matt and I canceled cable when we got married in 2015 are not at all hip to current television programming as a result. We saw our very first episode of Fixer Upper in 2018 🤦🏼‍♀️ because we gained cable at our beach condo.} I tossed around a few silly ideas with Matt and my dad about what to name my account but it seemed the obvious things were already taken. Eventually, one of us came up with “Summer On The Coast” as it sounded catchy and was not only my name, but sounded like a fancy way of life. I was able to secure the handle and changed my account name pretty much immediately. Fast forward about two weeks later when I was sitting in a business lobby where HGTV was blaring and guess what pops up? Christina. On. The. Coast. 😩 I came home and researched it and I did recognize the beautiful Christina from a few episodes of her former house flipping show that I had seen years prior. Ugh. I genuinely thought I had been so creative and unique in branding my Instagram, but little did I know I was basically a Jr 😂 Doggonnit. So, I just chose to press on because I felt that who knows where Christina’s career will take her and I didn’t want to give up on my clever name over one show on television that I had not previously seen or heard of. 😊 Now, I’m going to tell more of this story just because I know I have some sisters out there who can relate to this. When I saw that my Insta name was so similar to a home makeover TV show, I immediately called Matt in a panic (this was July 2019) and and we discussed it AT LENGTH for at least 24-48 hours before I emotionally moved on. Can you believe that just a few months ago (May 2020ish) that fool called me from his doctor appointment and said “Summer, you’re not gonna believe this but there’s a new show on TV right now about houses that is called Christina On The Coast. OMGGGGGGG!!!” Well, bless his little heart. 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ While listening is not his best attribute… I love him so much anyway ❤️

Since Christina’s life and show name have been dominating headlines all over my social media lately I felt the need to finally explain how MY insta name came to be. I am a huge fan of hers, though, especially now that we kind of share a name (different coasts, obvi) 🌊

The other thing I wanted to share with you was our master bathroom. I shared a couple photos in my insta feed a few months back but I haven’t talked much about our plans for this space yet. While things are still very tentative, we eventually plan to do a vertical wood wall treatment and paint a soothing spa color. I am seriously considering replacing our vanity lights and mirrors (so I’ll share them later once I make a final decision). We also need new vanity hardware because I am throwing out the acrylic/brass ones I purchased on Etsy (after a huge Insta influencer shared them). Several pieces have completely broken and are unusable and they’re less than a year old 😢 But there are a few items in our bath that we have loved and can definitely recommend! Our bathtub is a modern design free standing tub and I upgraded to the jetted version because we love baths over here. I got this beautiful bathtub tray and I love that it doubles as a bed tray with legs that pull down, too. This stool comes in handy to sit on when I’m bathing the girls or to display pretty things. Our heated towel rack by Bathroom Butler makes every bath experience luxe and now I cannot live without heated towels 😅 #spoilt I added a mix of faux and real greenery in here because I love the earthy, atrium feel they deliver. See my earlier blog here for our heated towel rack install info. Bathroom Butler is offering 15% off with my code SUMMER15
